A return ticket for immigration is proof that you will leave before your permitted stay ends. The airline can ask for it at check-in, and immigration again on arrival. Malaysia asks for "Confirmed Return Flight Tickets"; for UAE visas it arranges, Emirates asks for a copy of a return Emirates ticket. Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) sells a ₹699 flight reservation, which is not a paid ticket, so check the wording first.
- A return ticket can be checked twice: by the airline at check-in and by the immigration officer on arrival. DTV decides neither.
- Malaysia asks Indian visa-exempt visitors for "Confirmed Return Flight Tickets" and a "Confirmed Hotel Booking"; the word "confirmed" is not defined further.
- If Emirates arranges your UAE visa, it asks for a copy of a return Emirates ticket, whose number starts with 176. A held reservation has no ticket number, so it does not meet that rule.
- Singapore's High Commission says you need not buy a ticket to apply for a visa, but lists a confirmed onward or return air ticket among the conditions for entry.
- Carry funds, hotel proof and your visa or arrival-card confirmation along with the flight document.

A return ticket for immigration is proof that you will leave a country before your permitted stay ends. Airline staff can ask for it at check-in in India, and the immigration officer can ask again when you land. Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) sells a flight reservation for this at ₹699 per passenger: a booking held in the airline's system with a PNR, delivered as a PDF. It is not a paid ticket and it cannot be used to board.
That difference matters at some counters. Where the rule only says "return ticket" or "confirmed", the airline agent and the officer decide what they accept. Where it asks for a paid ticket or a ticket number, as Emirates does for UAE visas it arranges, a reservation does not meet the rule, and you should buy a real ticket instead. The sections below show which is which.
This page is about the airport and the immigration desk. For a round-trip reservation to put in a visa application, see our dummy return ticket page. If your trip continues to a third country rather than home, our onward ticket page covers that routing.
What a return ticket for immigration is, and what DTV sells
For immigration, a return ticket is any document that shows a flight out of the country, dated inside your permitted stay. A paid ticket does that, and so does a reservation, but they are not the same document. A ticketed booking has a 13-digit e-ticket number starting with the airline's 3-digit code, issued once the fare is paid. A reservation has a booking reference (the PNR) and no e-ticket number.
What we issue is the reservation. You can look it up on the airline's "Manage booking" page with the PNR and your surname while the hold is live, and our page on the dummy ticket with PNR explains what the PDF contains. How long a hold stays live is set by the airline, which is why we suggest receiving it the day before you fly.
Who asks for it: the airline first, then immigration
The airline usually asks first, at the check-in counter in India, before it prints your boarding pass. Check-in staff look up the destination's entry rules in IATA's Timatic database. Airlines check because they carry the cost: a destination can penalise an airline for carrying a passenger who does not meet its entry rules, and the airline has to fly that passenger back.
We have not found a published rule from India's Bureau of Immigration that asks tourists for a return ticket before they leave. The officer at the Indian immigration counter can still ask about your trip, so keep the same papers to hand. Some Indian airlines flying to the Gulf have issued their own advisories for visit-visa passengers; our page on the Air India Express return ticket rule covers one of them.
On arrival, the immigration officer decides separately, and passing check-in does not settle the question. UK government travel advice for Thailand says British visitors have been refused entry for failing to show proof of funds and onward or return travel.
Where Indian travellers are asked for a return ticket
Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the UAE each publish their own wording, and none of them says a reservation like ours is "accepted". This table sets out what each one asks for, as of September 2026.
| Destination | Entry route for Indians | Official wording on the ticket | Wording says paid? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thailand | 30-day visa exemption from 15 September 2026 | Royal Thai Embassy, Bern: "proof of onward travel (confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets)" | No; says "confirmed" |
| Malaysia | Visa exempt for up to 30 days, until 31 December 2026 | Malaysian High Commission: "Confirmed Return Flight Tickets" | No; says "confirmed" |
| Singapore | Visa required, through an authorised agent | Singapore High Commission: "confirmed onward/return air ticket (if applicable)" as an entry condition | No; says "confirmed" |
| UAE | Visit visa arranged before travel, or visa on arrival for holders of certain US, UK or EU visas and permits | Emirates, for visas it arranges: "A copy of your return Emirates ticket", number starting 176 | Yes, in effect: a ticket number exists only once a ticket is paid for |
Thailand's 30-day stay replaced the old 60-day exemption on 15 September 2026, so older blog posts are out of date. Malaysia's waiver ends on 31 December 2026 unless it is extended; check again before booking a 2027 trip. Singapore's High Commission says "Visa applicants are not required to buy a flight ticket before applying for an entry visa", so the ticket question arises at the border, not when you apply. For the UAE we could not confirm a government checklist, so that row gives Emirates' own rule.
Other visa-free and visa-on-arrival destinations use their own wording. Our round-up of visa-on-arrival return ticket rules lists them country by country, and the Malaysia page covers that trip in full.
What "confirmed" means, and when a paid ticket is demanded
No official page defines a "confirmed return ticket". Malaysia's High Commission, the Thai embassy in Bern and Singapore's High Commission all use the word without saying whether a reservation on hold qualifies. So the check-in agent and the immigration officer decide, and a reservation may or may not satisfy them.
Some wording goes further. If Emirates arranges your UAE visa, it asks for a copy of a return Emirates ticket, and the 176 it mentions is the start of an Emirates e-ticket number. A DTV reservation has no ticket number, so it does not meet that rule. The Royal Thai Embassy in London's section on visa on arrival, a route that no longer applies to Indian passport holders, asks for "Fully paid onward travel tickets", which shows that officials do write "paid" when they mean it.
Where a rule asks for a paid ticket or a ticket number, do not rely on a held reservation. Buy a refundable fare, which gives you a real ticket with an e-ticket number, or a cheap one-way ticket home that you will actually use. Refund terms depend on the fare rules, so read them before you pay. Our comparison of a reservation and a refundable ticket sets out the cost and risk of each, and our guide to the Emirates return ticket requirement covers the UAE case.
Documents to carry with your return ticket
Carry funds, accommodation and entry paperwork along with the flight, because the same entry rules list them. Each destination names different items.
- Thailand: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), filed online in the 3 days before you arrive, including the arrival date; your accommodation details; proof of funds. Official figures range from 10,000 to 20,000 baht per person, so carry proof of the higher amount.
- Malaysia: a "Confirmed Hotel Booking", the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) filed three days before arrival, a passport valid at least six months, and funds for the stay.
- Singapore: your visa, the SG Arrival Card filed within three days before arrival (including the day you arrive), and sufficient funds for the stay.
- UAE: your visa or entry permit, a passport valid at least six months, and, where Emirates arranged the visa, "A confirmed hotel reservation for the duration of your stay" or a family tenancy contract.
Keep a printed copy and a copy on your phone. If you need a hotel voucher for a visa application as well, our flight and hotel booking page puts both on one order for ₹1,398 per passenger.
What happens if you cannot show a return ticket
The check-in agent can refuse to issue a boarding pass, and the immigration officer can refuse entry. Travellers commonly report being asked to buy a ticket at the check-in desk, often at a high walk-up fare, before they are allowed to board. No government or airline page sets this out as a rule, so treat it as a risk, not a policy.
If an agent asks for a return ticket you do not have, you have three choices at the counter: buy a real ticket there, order a reservation (typically 10–20 minutes after payment, which may be too late for your flight), or rebook. Our guide to an airline asking for a return ticket covers each one. Whatever you show, describe it truthfully. No document, ours included, guarantees entry: it shows a concrete plan, and the officer weighs your whole situation.
How to order a return reservation for your trip
Enter names exactly as in the passport
First name, surname, date of birth and nationality, for up to 9 travellers on one itinerary.
Choose the route and dates
Pick Return for a flight home, or Multi-city if you leave from a different country. You can name a preferred airline in the notes box; it is a request, not a promise.
Pick the delivery date and pay
Answer "When do you want to receive it?" with the day before you fly. Pay by UPI in India and send the screenshot on WhatsApp, or pay by PayPal, debit card or credit card from anywhere else.
Check the PNR before you leave for the airport
Open the airline's "Manage booking" page, enter the PNR and your surname, and confirm the booking shows, as our PNR check guide explains. If it does not open, message us on WhatsApp with your order ID before check-in.
- The wording at your destination does not ask for a paid ticket or a ticket number
- The flight leaves the country you are entering, dated inside your permitted stay
- Hotel proof, funds and your arrival card are ready alongside the flight
- The reservation arrives the day before you fly and the PNR opens on the airline website
- You will call it a reservation if anyone asks
When all five are ticked, order your return reservation.
Frequently asked questions
Is a return ticket the same as an onward ticket?
Both show that you will leave before your permitted stay ends. A return ticket flies you back to where you started; an onward ticket takes you to a third country. Malaysia's wording says "return", so show a flight home there. Where a rule says "return or onward", either fits. Our onward ticket page covers trips that continue to another country.
Is a return ticket mandatory for a Thailand trip?
Thai embassy pages list proof of onward travel among what visa-exempt visitors should be able to show, and Thailand's tourism authority says "evidence of onward travel where required". Neither says it is checked for every traveller, and you cannot know in advance whether you will be asked. Carry it, with funds and your hotel details. Our Thailand page has the current rules.
Can I book my return with a different airline for a UAE visit visa?
Not if Emirates arranged the visa: it asks for a return Emirates ticket, with a number starting 176. For a visa arranged another way, we could not confirm a government checklist, so ask the airline or agent handling the visa what they need. Our UAE visa guide covers the visa itself.
What does a real ticket have that a reservation does not?
A ticket number. A ticketed booking carries a 13-digit e-ticket number that starts with the airline's 3-digit code, and it is issued only once the fare is paid. A reservation has a booking reference (the PNR) but no e-ticket number. Our guide to PNR vs e-ticket number shows where each appears on the document.
Can I use this reservation to board my flight home?
No. It is a flight reservation with a PNR, not a paid ticket, so it cannot be used to check in or board. Buy your actual return ticket separately once your plans are settled. If an officer or agent asks what the document is, say plainly that it is a reservation.
How early should I order before I fly?
Set "When do you want to receive it?" to the day before your flight. How long a reservation stays live is set by the airline, so ordering weeks ahead can leave you with a hold that has lapsed by the time you reach the counter. Check the PNR on the airline website before you leave for the airport.
