Maldives return ticket requirement: do Indian travellers need one?

Yes. Maldives Immigration lists "a complete travel itinerary, including confirmed return journey tickets" among the entry requirements for its tourist visa on arrival, together with "a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility" and "sufficient funds to cover the stay in the Maldives, or hold a sponsorship approved by Maldives Immigration". That is the Maldives return ticket requirement as printed on the page updated on 10 September 2026, which we checked on 27 September 2026. A reservation held without paying the fare is not a confirmed ticket in that sense, so an airline at check-in or an officer at Velana International Airport in Malé may refuse it.

What Maldives Immigration asks for at the border

Maldives Immigration grants the tourist visa on arrival and says tourists "do not require pre-approval for the visa". There is no application, no visa centre and no file. Instead, you must meet a short list of entry requirements when you land, and the return ticket is one of them.

Funds and sponsorship are alternatives to each other. The ticket and the accommodation are not optional. Immigration adds that a complete travel itinerary "does not guarantee entry to Maldives", because officers decide admissibility at the port of entry.

The one-month passport rule is short, but the next-destination rule can make it longer. If your flight out goes somewhere other than India, that country's rules travel with you. Who checks your return ticket: booking, check-in and Malé

Two parties can check it: your airline at check-in in India, and Maldives Immigration when you land. Nobody checks it earlier.

When you book

Nobody checks entry documents when you buy a flight to Malé or order a reservation. Because the Maldives needs no visa application, there is no embassy or visa-centre stage either.

At check-in in India

Check-in staff verify entry requirements using IATA's Timatic database before they issue a boarding pass. Where a destination's rules mention a return ticket, the agent can ask to see one. On arrival at Velana International Airport

Maldives Immigration checks you against the list above and decides whether to admit you. This is where the words "confirmed return journey tickets" are the rule itself, not an airline's reading of it. You also present your Traveller Declaration here.

Why a held reservation may not meet the Maldives return ticket requirement

A held reservation may not meet it because the wording is "confirmed return journey tickets", not "reserved" or "booked". A flight reservation from Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) is a real booking in the airline's system with a PNR you can look up, held without paying the fare. It has no e-ticket number, it is not a paid ticket and it cannot be used to board. Our explainer on the PNR and the e-ticket number shows the difference a check-in agent sees.

Two options meet the wording on its own terms:

• Buy the return flight you will use, dated for the day you plan to leave the Maldives.
• Buy a refundable fare and cancel it later, after checking the refund terms and any cancellation charge. Our comparison of a reservation and a refundable ticket sets out the cost and the risk.

Prepaid accommodation and funds

The accommodation rule is as strict as the ticket rule: "a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility". Two words carry the weight, "prepaid" and "registered". Carry the payment confirmation from your resort, hotel or guesthouse, not only a booking reference, and make sure the dates cover every night until your flight out.

DTV's hotel reservation voucher is a reservation for the city and dates you enter on the form. It is not a stay you have paid the hotel for, so it does not match the word "prepaid", and we do not suggest it for Maldives entry.

For funds, the page asks for "sufficient funds to cover the stay in the Maldives" and gives no amount. Per-day figures on travel websites do not come from that page. Carry a card and a recent bank statement. If someone else is paying, the alternative Immigration names is a sponsorship approved by Maldives Immigration, not a letter from a relative.

The Traveller Declaration on IMUGA

Every foreigner arriving in the Maldives must file the Traveller Declaration on the official IMUGA portal within 96 hours before arrival. Immigration says "each traveller, including children and minors, must submit an individual Traveller Declaration", so a family of four files four. You show the completed declaration at immigration when you land.

Count the window from your landing time. If your flight is due in Malé at 14:00 on 10 November, you can submit from 14:00 on 6 November onwards.

It costs nothing. Immigration's Traveller Declaration page describes the form as free of charge and gives the portal as imuga.immigration.gov.mv. A site that charges you to fill it in is not the government portal.

The declaration and the return ticket are separate requirements. Filing one does not replace the other.

How long the tourist visa lets you stay

Maldives Immigration's tourist visa page does not state a number of days, so we do not print one here. Your permitted stay is decided when you are admitted. Check what you have been granted before you leave the arrivals hall, and make sure your return flight falls inside it.

If you need longer, Maldives Immigration announced on 24 April 2026 that tourist visa extensions are now requested on the IMUGA portal, from 23 April 2026, with applications "expected to be completed within 48 hours". The announcement gives no fee and no maximum length. An extension usually means a new flight date as well; our note on exit tickets for visa extensions covers that step.

Ordering a flight reservation for the Maldives

What you get from DTV is a held reservation, not a paid ticket: a booking on the route and dates you enter, sent as a PDF itinerary with a PNR. Because the Maldives rule asks for confirmed tickets, order one only if you accept that an airline or officer may still ask for a paid ticket. The booking desk chooses the airline and flight; you can name a preferred airline in the notes box as a request, not a promise.

1. Enter your details

   Names exactly as in each passport, date of birth, nationality, route, dates, and an email address or WhatsApp number. No passport scan and no account.

2. Pay ₹699 per passenger

   By UPI in India, then send the payment screenshot on WhatsApp. From outside India, pay about US$8.50 per passenger by PayPal or card.

3. Choose when to receive it

   The form asks "When do you want to receive it?" and the reservation is issued on that date. Delivery is typically 10–20 minutes after payment is confirmed; weekends, holidays and busy periods can be slower.

4. Check the PNR

   Check the PNR on the airline's website before you leave for the airport. A reservation is a temporary hold, and how long it stays live depends on the airline.

Orders are final and non-refundable once the reservation is issued, so check names and dates before you pay. DTV is not affiliated with Maldives Immigration, any airline or any resort, and no document, held or paid, decides what a check-in agent or an immigration officer does on the day.

• A paid return ticket, or a refundable fare, dated inside your permitted stay
• Payment confirmation for a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse, covering every night
• A card or recent bank statement showing funds for the stay
• A Traveller Declaration for each traveller, filed on IMUGA within 96 hours before arrival
• A passport for every child, valid at least 1 month, or longer if your next country asks
