What a flight itinerary for visa means on a checklist
On a Schengen checklist, a flight itinerary means a reservation for a return or round trip, not a purchased ticket. The EU Visa Code lists a "reservation of or return or round ticket" among the documents that show you intend to leave (Regulation 810/2009, Annex II). The harmonised document list for Schengen applicants in India puts it under "Proof of means of transport" and asks for a "Flight reservation of return or round ticket".
Several consulates say plainly that you should not buy the ticket yet. The Netherlands asks for a reservation in your name for travel to and from the Schengen area and adds: "You do not need a paid travel ticket" (Netherlands Worldwide). Spain's embassy in New Delhi advises applicants not to buy the air ticket until the visa is granted, and Slovakia's says there is no need to buy one before then.
A flight itinerary is not the same as a travel itinerary, which is the day-by-day plan of what you will do on the trip. Some checklists ask for both. If yours asks for the day-by-day plan, our travel itinerary template covers it.
Checklist wording and what to submit
Find the phrase on your checklist in the left column. The first three rows all lead to the same document. The last two are different requirements, and a held reservation does not answer them in the same way.

Where a flight itinerary is optional
For UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitor visas, a flight itinerary is optional. None of the four lists a flight booking as a required document, and the UK, US and Australian governments tell applicants not to book travel before a decision.

Some applicants still include a reservation for these visas, because the form asks for planned travel dates and a booking lets them state the same dates and route everywhere. That is a choice, not a requirement, and it will not carry an application. Funds, employment and ties to home do that.
What the itinerary itself must show
The itinerary must show four things that an officer can check against the rest of your file:
- Every traveller's name exactly as printed in the passport
- The departure and arrival airport for every flight
- The outbound date and, for a return trip, the return date
- A booking reference (PNR) that opens on the airline's own website
An itinerary for an unpaid reservation will not show an e-ticket number or a fare, because no ticket has been issued. That is normal. What matters is that the booking exists, so look the PNR up yourself on the airline's website before the file goes in.
Some sellers offer a cheaper "flight itinerary" that is only a formatted document, with no booking in any airline's system. Its reference will not open on the airline's website, and the Visa Code allows a refusal where there are reasonable doubts about the authenticity of a supporting document (Article 32(1)(b)). Make the dates agree with the rest of your file
Use one set of dates on every document. An officer reads the itinerary next to the application form, the hotel booking, the insurance and the cover letter, and a date that differs between two of them is the easiest problem in a file to avoid. The dates can also shape the visa itself: Slovakia's embassy says that if the application is approved, "the visa will be issued according to the dates on the booking".
Say you plan to fly Delhi to Paris on 14 November 2026 and back on 24 November. This is what each document should show.

Names exactly as in the passport, date of birth, nationality, route, dates, and an email address or WhatsApp number. No passport scan and no account. Up to 9 passengers fit on one order and one itinerary. Under "When do you want to receive it?", pick the day before you need the document.
Pay and receive the PDF
UPI in India, then send the payment screenshot on WhatsApp. Outside India, PayPal or card, about US$8.50 per passenger. The PDF typically reaches your email or WhatsApp 10–20 minutes after payment is confirmed; weekends, holidays and busy periods can be slower.
Check the PNR yourself
Open the airline's website, enter the PNR and your surname, and confirm the names, flights and dates before the file goes in.
A reservation is a temporary hold, and the airline decides how long it stays live, so ask for it one day before you need it rather than weeks ahead. Orders are final once the reservation has been issued, so check the names and dates on the order form before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
Is a flight itinerary the same as a dummy ticket?
In a visa file, yes. "Dummy ticket" is the name sellers and applicants use; consulates write "flight reservation" or "flight itinerary". Both mean a booking held in your name without the fare being paid. Some sellers use "itinerary" for a cheaper PDF with no booking behind it, so ask whether the PNR opens on the airline's website. Can I submit a one-way flight itinerary instead of a return one?
Only when your trip really is one-way, such as a student, work or relocation visa. The harmonised Schengen list for India asks for a reservation of a return or round ticket, so a one-way itinerary for a short holiday looks like a gap in the file. What travel dates should I put on my flight itinerary?
Put the dates you actually plan to travel, and use the same ones on the visa form, the hotel booking, the insurance and the cover letter. Work backwards from the processing time: the Visa Code gives a Schengen consulate 15 calendar days to decide, extendable to 45. Our guide to travel dates works through the calculation.
Does a verifiable flight itinerary make my visa more likely to be approved?
No. It shows that a concrete travel plan exists and can be checked, which is one page in a larger file. The officer still weighs your purpose, funds, ties to home and travel history. Is a free or very cheap flight itinerary good enough for a visa file?
Only if its booking reference opens on the airline's own "Manage booking" page. That check is free and takes a minute. A free generator or a formatted template produces a page that looks right, but its reference was never issued by an airline, so the check fails. Does the itinerary need every traveller's name on it?
Yes, if you are applying together. Switzerland's tourist checklist for India, for example, asks for a flight reservation with the names of all travellers.
