Flight reservation for visa: how a held booking works

A flight reservation for visa applications is a booking made in an airline's reservation system and held without paying the fare. It carries a PNR, the booking reference you can look up on the airline's "Manage booking" page while the hold is live. Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) issues one as a PDF itinerary for ₹699 per passenger, the same price for one-way or return.

It is not a ticket. No fare has been paid, so you cannot board a flight with it. People also call it a provisional booking, a temporary flight reservation or a hold ticket. Schengen consulates ask for exactly this kind of booking. For UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitor visas a flight booking is optional, and a few immigration rules ask for a paid ticket, which a reservation does not meet. Booked versus ticketed: the difference that matters

A flight is booked when the reservation is saved in the airline's system, and ticketed only when the fare is paid (or miles are redeemed) and a ticket is issued. Between those two steps the booking exists as a record with your name, your flights and a deadline for payment. That in-between stage is what a flight reservation for visa is.

Travel agents' reservation systems treat booking and ticketing as separate steps as a matter of course: the booking is created first, and issuing the ticket is a later, final step. A held reservation is that first step on its own, not a separate kind of document. How a hold is created: the PNR and the record locator

A hold is created by saving a passenger name record, or PNR, in the airline's or the agent's reservation system. Five elements have to be present before it can be saved:

• the passenger's name
• contact details for the travel agent or airline office that made the booking
• at least one flight segment
• the name of the person who made the booking
• a ticketing element: either a ticket number or a deadline by which one must be issued

The record locator is the code you use to look the booking up, typically six letters and numbers. When a booking is made in an agent's system, the airline's own system creates a separate record, and the two codes can differ. The ticketing time limit: why every hold expires

Every unticketed reservation expires because it carries a ticketing time limit, a deadline set by the airline's fare rules when the booking is made. If no ticket is issued by then, the airline can cancel the reservation and release the seat.

Say a booking is made on 3 October for a flight on 14 November, and the fare rules give a ticketing deadline of 6 October. On 7 October the booking can disappear, even though the flight is still five weeks away. The deadline depends on the airline and the fare, not on the travel date.

Reservation vs e-ticket vs refundable ticket

A reservation holds a seat without payment, an e-ticket is a paid seat, and a refundable ticket is a paid seat you can get money back on. Which one you need depends on the exact wording of the rule you are meeting.

Where a rule asks for a paid ticket, a held reservation does not meet it, and a refundable fare is the honest alternative at a real cost. Compare the cost and the risk of each before you decide.

What the embassy and the airline see

The consulate sees your PDF and, if an officer chooses to check, the same booking on the airline's website. The PDF shows passenger names, flights, dates and a PNR. It does not show an e-ticket number or a fare receipt, because no ticket exists yet. That is normal for an unticketed booking.

On the airline's website, the PNR and the passenger's surname bring up the names and flights while the hold is live. The status wording differs from airline to airline. Why consulates ask for a reservation, and when a paid ticket is needed

Schengen consulates ask for a reservation because the EU document list they work from names one, and EU guidance tells them not to demand a paid ticket when you apply. The harmonised list for Schengen applicants in India asks for a "Flight reservation of return or round ticket", and the EU's handbook for consular staff says "a paid return ticket should not be required upon lodging". It adds that one may be asked for in exceptional cases once the visa has been issued. Spain, the Netherlands and Slovakia go further and tell applicants in writing not to buy the ticket until the visa is granted. Our Schengen visa page sets out the full document list.

Some rules do ask for a ticket, and there a reservation does not fit. Immigration New Zealand tells visa-waiver travellers: "Your onward tickets must be paid for before your travel." The US Visa Waiver Program regulation requires a "round trip ticket" on arrival, and says nothing about reservations. Neither rule covers Indian passport holders, who need a visa for both countries, but they matter if you hold a visa-waiver passport. When to book yours

Ask for the reservation one day before you need it, then check the PNR yourself the same day. Book weeks ahead and the hold may lapse before your appointment. Leave it to the last hour and a delivery delay at a weekend or on a holiday can catch you out. The booking form asks "When do you want to receive it?", and the reservation is issued on the date you choose there, so set it to the day before your appointment or upload deadline, not the day you place the order. Getting a flight reservation from DTV

1. Tell us your route and dates

   Names exactly as in the passport, date of birth, nationality, your route and travel dates, and an email address or WhatsApp number. No passport scan, no account. You can name a preferred airline in the notes box; it is a request, not a promise.

2. Pay ₹699 per passenger

   UPI in India, then send the payment screenshot on WhatsApp. PayPal, debit card or credit card outside India, about US$8.50 per passenger. One order covers up to 9 passengers on one itinerary.

3. Receive the PDF

   By email or WhatsApp, typically 10–20 minutes after payment is confirmed, or on the date you chose on the form. Weekends, holidays and busy periods can be slower.

4. Check the PNR, then submit it

   Look the booking up on the airline's website before you attach it to your visa file.

• Names match the passport exactly, including middle names
• Route and dates match your visa form, hotel booking and insurance
• The PNR opens on the airline's "Manage booking" page
• The delivery date is one day before you need the document
