Dummy ticket validity: how long a reservation stays live

Dummy ticket validity is set by the airline, not the seller. Why reservations expire, how long holds tend to last, and how to time your order for a visa.

Updated 6 min read By the DTV Editorial Team
Quick answer

Dummy ticket validity is set by the airline, not the seller. An unpaid reservation stays live until the airline's ticketing time limit, which the airline and its fare rules fix when the booking is made; it can be a few hours or several days. Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) publishes no fixed period. Receive the reservation one day before you need it and check the PNR on the airline website.

Key points
  • The airline sets how long an unpaid reservation stays live, through the ticketing time limit in its fare rules.
  • There is no industry-wide figure: a hold can last a few hours or several days, and the airline can cancel earlier.
  • The flight date printed on the PDF does not make the reservation last longer.
  • DTV does not publish a validity period; you choose the date the reservation is issued on the booking form.
  • Receive it the day before you need it and check the PNR on the airline's website before you submit it.

Dummy ticket validity is set by the airline, not by the seller. An unpaid flight reservation stays live until the airline's ticketing time limit, a payment deadline that the airline and its fare rules fix when the booking is made. That can be a few hours or several days, and the airline can cancel the booking earlier. There is no industry-wide figure.

That is why Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) does not publish a validity period in days. What we can control is when your reservation is issued: the booking form asks "When do you want to receive it?", and the reservation is issued on that date. Our advice is to receive it one day before you need it and to check the PNR on the airline's website before you submit it. The sections below explain why reservations expire, what happens when one does, and how to plan around it.

Why dummy ticket validity is limited

A reservation expires because nobody has paid for it. In an airline reservation system, booking and ticketing are separate steps. Saving a booking creates a passenger name record (PNR), and a PNR cannot be saved without a ticketing element: a ticket number if the fare is paid, or a ticketing time limit if it is not. A dummy ticket always carries the second kind.

The ticketing time limit is the airline's deadline for payment. If no ticket is issued by then, the airline can cancel the booking and release the seat. The airline sets the deadline from its fare rules at the moment the booking is made, so two reservations on the same route, made on different days or on different fares, can have different limits. A seller controls when the booking is made; the airline controls how long it is held. Every flight reservation for a visa file works this way, whoever makes it.

The flight date and the hold are two different clocks

A dummy ticket carries two dates that are easy to confuse. The flight date is printed on the PDF and can be weeks or months away. The hold, meaning how long the booking stays live in the airline's system, is set separately by the time limit and is usually far shorter.

A far-off flight date does not make the reservation last longer. Say your VFS appointment is on Tuesday 13 October 2026 and your itinerary shows a flight to Paris on 20 November. For validity, the date that matters is 13 October, when you hand over your file. The flight five weeks later is the plan the booking describes, not the day it has to survive until.

Choosing travel dates and choosing when to order are therefore separate decisions. What dates to put on a flight itinerary covers the first; the rest of this page covers the second.

How long holds usually last

No official source gives a standard length for an unpaid reservation. What can be said in general terms is set out below.

Kinds of flight hold and who decides how long they last
Kind of holdWho sets the lengthWhat to expect
Unpaid reservation made by an agent or a reservation service (a dummy ticket)The airline, through its fare rules, when the booking is madeFrom a few hours to several days; the airline can cancel earlier
Airline fare-hold productThe airline, in the product's termsTypically one to three days where offered, sometimes for a fee; check the airline's own page
US 24-hour ruleUS regulation 14 CFR 259.5(b)(4)At least 24 hours for flights sold in the United States and booked a week or more ahead; the airline may offer free cancellation instead of a hold
Paid, ticketed bookingThe fare rules of the ticketDoes not lapse for non-payment, because the fare has been paid

The US rule is the only one of these with a legal minimum. It requires a reservation to be "held at the quoted fare without payment, or cancelled without penalty, for at least twenty-four hours", and the airline chooses which. Airline hold products are compared in 24, 48 and 72 hour flight holds.

You will also see reservations advertised as "valid" for 7, 14 or 30 days. Because the airline sets the time limit, a fixed figure like that is the seller's own promise, not the airline's. Before you pay for one, ask what happens if the airline cancels the booking sooner.

What happens when a dummy ticket expires

When the time limit passes without payment, the airline can cancel the booking. After that the PNR may no longer open on the airline's Manage booking page, or it may show the flights as cancelled; what you see differs by airline. The PDF on your phone does not change, but it no longer matches a live booking.

Whether that matters depends on when it happens. If the reservation lapses before you submit, get a new one for the date you need it rather than handing in a booking you know has gone. If it lapses after you submit, that is usually timing. Schengen consulates normally decide within 15 calendar days, and up to 45 when a file needs closer examination (European Commission, as of September 2026), while an unpaid hold is measured in days. Schengen visa processing time has the detail.

We cannot tell you how a particular consulate treats a reservation that lapsed after submission. If a consulate or visa centre asks for a current itinerary, order a new reservation for the dates you then plan, and if anyone asks, say it is a reservation. Date changes, reissues and expiry explains what to do next.

How to time your order when there is no fixed validity

Time the reservation to the day someone will look at it, not to the day you pay. The receiving date on our booking form does this for you.

  1. Find the date that matters

Your VFS, BLS or TLScontact appointment, the day you upload the file to a visa portal, or your interview. Not your travel date.

  2. Set the receiving date to the day before

On the booking form, answer "When do you want to receive it?" with that date. The reservation is issued on that date, not on the day you pay.

  3. Check the PNR when it arrives

Look it up on the airline's website with the booking reference and surname; verifying your PNR shows how. If it does not open, message us on WhatsApp with your order ID before your appointment.

With the example above, you would set the receiving date to Monday 12 October for the Tuesday appointment. Orders for the same day typically arrive 10–20 minutes after payment is confirmed, but the terms say delays can happen at weekends, on holidays and in busy periods. If the day before your appointment is a Sunday or a public holiday, ask on WhatsApp before ordering. If your appointment is tomorrow and you have not ordered yet, see the urgent dummy ticket page. When to book a dummy ticket covers timing for portal uploads, interviews and other cases.

Validity for proof of onward travel runs on a different clock

At an airport, the date that matters is the day you fly, not your visa appointment. If an airline may ask for proof of onward travel at check-in, the reservation has to be live at check-in, and the airline decides what it accepts. Some rules also ask for more than a hold: Immigration New Zealand tells visa-waiver travellers that "Your onward tickets must be paid for before your travel." A reservation of any length does not meet that wording. Onward ticket validity covers timing for the airport.

Checklist: keeping your reservation live when it counts

  • You know the exact date someone will look at the reservation.
  • You set the receiving date to the day before that date.
  • You checked the PNR on the airline's website on the day it arrived.
  • If your appointment moved, you asked on WhatsApp about a reservation for the new date.
  • You are not relying on anyone's promise of a fixed number of days.
  • Where a rule asks for a paid ticket, you have a paid ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a dummy ticket valid for 14 days or a month?

Not as a promise from us, because the airline, not the seller, decides how long an unpaid reservation is held. Dummy Tickets Visa does not publish a fixed period. If you need a booking that stays in place for weeks, a fully refundable ticket is the option that does not depend on a hold. Dummy ticket vs refundable ticket compares the cost.

How can I check whether my dummy ticket is still valid?

Open the airline's own Manage booking page and enter the booking reference and the passenger's surname. If the names and flights appear, the reservation is live. If nothing opens, or the flights show as cancelled, the booking has lapsed or the code is not the airline's own. PNR not showing goes through the usual causes.

Is a reservation that lasts 48 hours enough for a visa application?

It can be, if it is live on the day someone looks at it. Timing matters more than length: a short hold received the day before your appointment is live at the counter, while a longer one ordered weeks ahead may already have gone. That is why Dummy Tickets Visa issues the reservation on the date you choose rather than quoting a fixed period.

Can a dummy ticket be extended?

Plan on a new reservation rather than an extension, because the airline's time limit decides how long a hold lasts. If your appointment moves, message Dummy Tickets Visa on WhatsApp with your order ID and you will be told the quickest way to get a reservation for the new date. Do not assume that is free: orders are final once the reservation has been issued.

Will an expired dummy ticket get my visa refused?

We cannot tell you how a particular officer will read your file. A reservation that lapses after you submit is a matter of timing, because holds last days and decisions often take weeks. A booking that had already lapsed when you submitted it is a weaker document, and an edited PDF is a false one. Dummy tickets and visa rejection looks at the real risks.

What happens to my dummy ticket after the visa is issued?

Nothing you need to act on. It is an unpaid reservation, so the airline can cancel it once its time limit passes, and it cannot be used to fly. Book and pay for your actual flight separately, on dates that fit the visa you were given. After visa approval covers the next steps.
