Dummy ticket for student visa: what five checklists ask for

A dummy ticket for student visa files is optional in all five countries on this page. The UK, Canada, the US and Germany do not list a flight booking on their official student checklists, and it is not a standard document for Australia's subclass 500 either. What each checklist does ask for is your admission document, proof of funds and a few items specific to that country, set out below with the official source for each.

So if your appointment is this week, do not buy a flight ticket for it. The US State Department says it in so many words: "Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa."

Some students still want a reservation, usually for a lender, a sponsor or to pin down their own travel date. Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) makes one for ₹699 per passenger. It is a booking in the airline's reservation system, held without paying the fare, with a PNR you can look up on the airline's website while the hold is live. It is not a paid ticket. Do you need a dummy ticket for student visa applications?

No. None of the five official checklists below makes a flight booking a required document. What they do care about is timing: each country ties your first entry to a date on a document you already hold.

A missing flight booking cannot make a file incomplete when the checklist never asked for one. A thin bank statement or a missing admission document can.

UK Student visa: CAS, funds and a one-month arrival window

The UK Student visa does not ask for a flight booking. GOV.UK's document list has two items every applicant needs, a current passport and the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your course provider. Other items depend on your case: proof of money, an ATAS certificate if your course and nationality require it, tuberculosis test results, and parental consent if you are under 18. The page does not mention flights or travel bookings at all.

The route replaced the old Tier 4 (General) visa. As of September 2026, GOV.UK's Student visa overview gives the fee from outside the UK as £558, says you can apply at the earliest 6 months before your course starts, and says a decision usually takes 3 weeks. The same page sets the arrival window: up to 1 week before a course of 6 months or less, and up to 1 month before a course of more than 6 months. For a one-year course starting on 25 January 2027, that means arriving no earlier than 25 December 2026. Canada study permit: no flight item and no fixed arrival date

IRCC's study permit checklist has no flight or itinerary item. The document page (modified 26 January 2026) lists a letter of acceptance, a provincial or territorial attestation letter in most cases, proof of identity and proof of funds. A letter of explanation is recommended, and a medical exam or police certificate is needed only in some cases.

Canada is the most relaxed of the five on timing. IRCC's arrival guidance says "There is no set time frame for you to arrive in Canada before you begin your studies", and asks only that you leave yourself a reasonable amount of time to prepare. The document you must carry is the port of entry letter of introduction the visa office sent when it approved your permit. The page does not say what happens if you land after your program has started, so ask your school before you plan a late arrival. Australia subclass 500: built around your CoE

A flight booking is not a standard document for the Australian Student visa (subclass 500). The Home Affairs subclass 500 page builds the application around your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your education provider. The Department's document checklist tool then gives a personal list based on your passport and your provider. Use that tool rather than any general list, including this one.

Home Affairs also decides how early you may enter before your course starts. We could not confirm the current rule on the official page this month, so we do not quote a number of days here. Before you pick a date, read the conditions on your grant notice, check them in VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online), and compare them with the course start date on your CoE.

US F-1 visa: the 30-day entry rule

The F-1 process asks for no flight ticket, and the State Department tells applicants not to buy one early. Its student visa page lists the DS-160 form, the SEVIS I-901 fee, the Form I-20 from your school, the visa application fee and an interview. The consular officer decides your case at that interview. Germany national visa for study: no flight item, but the entry date matters

Germany's student checklist does not list a flight reservation. A degree course lasts longer than 90 days, so students apply for a national (type D) visa rather than a Schengen visa. The German Missions in India checklist for students (last updated September 2024) asks for your passport, forms, photos, APS certificate, letter of admission, proof of financial means such as a blocked account (Sperrkonto), academic records, language certificate, CV, motivation letter, travel health insurance and the visa fee.

The APS certificate is "always mandatory" unless an exception applies, such as PhD or postdoc study, a German or EU public scholarship, or studies built on a non-Indian qualification. Two items depend on your travel date. The travel health insurance must cover the first 90 days "starting with and including your intended date of entry into Germany". And the checklist says processing "will take six to eight weeks", because the file goes to the local Aliens' Authority in Germany. When students still book a flight reservation

Students usually order a reservation for someone other than the consulate. These are the common cases:

• A sponsor, scholarship body or education lender wants a planned travel date before releasing living-cost money. Ask what they accept first: if they want a paid ticket, a reservation will not meet that.
• Your university's pre-arrival form asks for a planned arrival date before you have bought a ticket. Tell them it is a reservation, and send the real flight once you buy it.
• You want a concrete date inside the entry window before an F-1 interview or a German visa appointment, where you may be asked when you plan to travel.

One-way or return for a student

One-way suits most students, because you know when your course starts but not when you will fly home. A course can run long, and holidays, placements or a post-study work route can all move the return. A return date made up today is a date you may have to explain later.

Book a return reservation only when someone asks for both legs, for example a sponsor. It costs the same ₹699 per passenger. Picking the date on a student reservation

Start from the course start date on your admission document and work back to the earliest date the country lets you in. In the sample above, a one-year UK course starts on 25 January 2027, the window opens on 25 December 2026, and 14 January sits comfortably inside it.

1. Find the start date

   Take it from your CAS, letter of acceptance, CoE, Form I-20 or German letter of admission.

2. Apply the entry rule

   UK: 1 month before a course of more than 6 months, 1 week before a shorter one. US: no more than 30 days before the I-20 date. Canada: no fixed window. Australia: your grant conditions in VEVO. Germany: your visa's start date, with insurance from the day you enter.

3. Set the delivery date
