Dummy ticket questions and answers

These dummy ticket questions and answers pick up where our main FAQ stops. Each answer is under 50 words, names the official source for any rule it states, and ends with a link to the full guide. We checked every rule against its source on 27 September 2026.

Two points shape most of the answers. For the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia, a flight booking is not a required visa document at all. And a few rules ask for a paid ticket, which a held reservation is not; where that happens, the answer says so. These are general answers, not legal advice, so confirm the current checklist with the consulate, visa centre or airline before you rely on one.

Dummy ticket questions and answers: what it is and whether it is allowed

A dummy ticket is a genuine flight reservation held without paying the fare, and it is allowed in a visa file when you present it as a reservation. Terms such as PNR, e-ticket and booking class are defined in our glossary.

Is a dummy ticket the same thing as a fake ticket?

No. Dummy Tickets Visa (DTV) makes the booking in the airline's own reservation system, with a PNR you can look up. A fake ticket is an edited or invented PDF with no booking behind it, and Article 32 of the EU Visa Code lets a consulate refuse a visa when it doubts a document is genuine. Is one-way enough, or should the reservation show a return flight?

For a visit visa, show a return. The EU's harmonised Schengen document list for India asks for a "flight reservation of return or round ticket". One-way suits a student or work visa, where you are not expected back within weeks. DTV charges ₹699 per passenger for either. Compare them in one-way or return ticket for visa.

Can a dummy ticket cover a trip through two or more cities?

Yes, as a multi-city itinerary, priced at ₹699 per two flights, per passenger. Delhi to Paris, then Rome back to Delhi, is two flights: ₹699 for one traveller, ₹1,398 for two. A four-flight route is ₹1,398 per passenger. The form and pricing are explained on multi-city itineraries.

Does a flight reservation work for a transit visa?

It can be part of the evidence, but transit rules are tighter on timing. For a UK transit visa, GOV.UK asks for evidence that your outward journey "has been confirmed and is within 48 hours of arrival, for example travel booking confirmation". Canada's transit guide asks for itinerary evidence from the airline or travel agent. Details are on flight bookings for a transit visa.

Checking the reservation: quick answers

You check a reservation by entering its PNR and the surname on the airline's Manage booking page. Do it when the PDF arrives and again on the morning you submit your file.

Does looking up my PNR use up the hold or change it?

No. Opening the booking on the airline's Manage booking page only displays it. The hold changes when the airline tickets it, cancels it, or its own time limit passes. Look it up as often as you need to before your appointment. Step-by-step help is on verify your PNR.

My passport has only one name. What do I type as the surname?

Type the surname exactly as it is printed on your PDF itinerary, not as you think it should be. The airline matches your lookup to the name as it was entered in the booking, and airlines record single-name passengers in different ways. See how a name without a surname is written on a ticket.

What if a name on the reservation does not match the passport?

Message us on WhatsApp with your order ID before you submit anything, and do not edit the PDF. An edited PDF no longer matches the airline's record, which is exactly what a consulate sees if it looks up the PNR. When you order, type every name as it appears in the passport. Schengen: quick answers

Schengen consulates ask for a flight reservation, not a paid ticket, and the answers below deal with the rules around it.

Will a Schengen consulate make me buy a paid ticket before deciding?

Not to apply. The EU's Visa Code Handbook for consular staff says "a paid return ticket should not be required upon lodging", though one may be requested in exceptional circumstances once the visa is issued. The Handbook is guidance for staff, not a right you can enforce. See flight reservations for a Schengen visa.

Which consulate gets my application if I visit three Schengen countries?

The country that is your main destination, judged by the number of days or by the purpose of the stay. If there is no main destination, apply to the country you enter first (Visa Code, Article 5). A consulate that is not competent will not decide your case, and the visa fee is refundable then. See main destination or first entry.

Must my flight reservation match my hotel dates exactly?

Yes. Land on your first check-in date and leave on or just after the last check-out date, as your form, cover letter and insurance say. Spain's embassy in New Delhi ties the visa dates to the bookings, and Visa Code Article 32 allows refusal over doubts about a document's contents. See the Schengen documents checklist.

Do I need a new reservation for each trip on a multiple-entry visa?

Not for the visa: a flight document goes in only when you apply. Entry conditions still apply at each border crossing, so carry your real return ticket. Indians living in India who lawfully used two Schengen visas in three years can get a two-year visa, if the passport allows and the consulate agrees. See the multiple-entry cascade.

Does the Entry/Exit System change what flight document I need?

No. The Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, records your entries and exits digitally at the border instead of stamping your passport. It does not change the consulate's checklist: Annex II of the Visa Code still lists a "reservation of or return or round ticket". See EES and ETIAS explained.

UK, USA, Canada and Australia: quick answers

None of these four countries requires a flight booking for a visitor visa, and the UK, the USA and Australia tell applicants not to book travel before a decision.

What exactly do the four governments say about booking flights?

GOV.UK: "You should not book your travel until you get a decision on your visa application." The US State Department: "Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa." Australia says not to arrange travel until the grant arrives in writing. Canada lists "flight details" only as a recommended itinerary document. Country detail is in our visa guides.

If a flight booking is not required, why do people still include one?

For consistent dates. The application forms ask for planned travel dates, and a reservation lets the form, cover letter and hotel booking show one plan without buying a ticket. It carries little weight: the UK's guide lists "flight bookings (unless transiting)" among documents that are "less useful as evidence". More on flight bookings for a UK visa.

Can I use the US ESTA or the UK ETA on an Indian passport?

No. India is not in the US Visa Waiver Program and is not on the UK's ETA list, so Indian passport holders apply for a B1/B2 visa for the US and a Standard Visitor visa for the UK. This depends on your passport, not on where you live. See the US visa guide.

What do Australia and Canada look at instead of a ticket?

Money and ties to home. Australia's Home Affairs asks for proof of funds "for your stay and to leave Australia" and reasons to return, such as a job or family. Canada's guide asks for enough money "to return home". A reservation shows a plan; funds and ties carry the weight. See the Australia visa guide.

Asia and the Gulf: quick answers

Here the rules split between the visa stage and the border: several countries ask for a return or onward ticket at entry even when the visa itself needs no flight document.

How long can Indians stay in Thailand without a visa now?

30 days, since 15 September 2026, replacing the earlier 60-day exemption. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi says it remains effective "until further announcement". The Thai embassy in London asks visa-exempt visitors for proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival. See onward tickets for Thailand.

Does Malaysia's visa waiver for Indians need a return ticket?

Yes. Malaysia's High Commission in New Delhi lists "Confirmed Return Flight Tickets" and a "Confirmed Hotel Booking" for Indian visa-exempt visitors, plus the MDAC arrival card three days before arrival. The waiver runs until 31 December 2026 unless extended. "Confirmed" may mean paid, so ask your airline before you fly. See entering Malaysia.

Can I get a Singapore visa without buying a flight ticket?

Yes. Singapore's High Commission in New Delhi says "Visa applicants are not required to buy a flight ticket before applying for an entry visa", and those who buy one bear the loss if refused. At entry, officers can ask for a confirmed onward or return air ticket. See the Singapore visa guide.

Does a Dubai tourist visa need a return ticket?

We could not find a UAE government checklist that says so. Emirates, when it arranges your visa, asks for "a copy of your return Emirates ticket" (ticket number starting 176) and a confirmed hotel reservation. That is a paid ticket, which a held reservation is not. Other sponsors set their own lists. See the Dubai visa guide.

Can Indian passport holders use Saudi Arabia's eVisa?

No. India is not among the 68 countries on Saudi Arabia's tourist eVisa portal, so Indians apply through the Saudi embassy. Holders of a valid US, UK or Schengen visa may be able to get a visa on arrival; check visitsaudi.com first. We found no official flight-document checklist for Indian applicants. Does China's tourist visa ask for a hotel booking as well as a flight booking?

Yes. The Chinese Embassy's list for applicants in India asks for a "Tour Itinerary; hotel order; airline ticket order", meaning booking records for both. A visa centre notice of April 2026 adds three months of bank statements with a steady monthly balance of at least ₹1 lakh. See the China visa guide.

Onward travel at the airport

Airlines check the destination's entry rules before they issue a boarding pass, so a missing onward ticket can stop you at check-in, before you ever reach immigration.

Why does the airline check my onward ticket when it is the destination's rule?

Because destination countries penalise airlines that carry passengers who do not meet entry rules. The UK can charge a carrier £2,000 for each passenger who arrives without a required visa or ETA (Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, section 40). Can I be refused boarding even with an approved visa?

Yes. A visa does not replace the entry conditions. Immigration New Zealand tells visitor visa holders: "Every time you travel here, you must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or proof you have enough money to buy one". For visa-waiver travellers it adds that onward tickets "must be paid for before your travel". See what happens after a boarding refusal.

Do bus or train tickets count as proof of onward travel?

Officially, in two places we could confirm. Costa Rica's tourism board accepts a pre-purchased bus ticket or cruise passage out of the country, and the Royal Thai Embassy in Bern accepts "confirmed air, train, bus or boat tickets". Elsewhere this is not confirmed, and the airline may still want an air ticket. See onward ticket options.

Will the airline refund my fare if I am refused boarding for no onward ticket?

We could not confirm a refund in any airline's published conditions of carriage, so do not count on one. Read your own airline's conditions before you fly. The safer course is to carry the onward ticket the destination asks for, or a refundable fare where the rule wants a paid ticket. See your options at the check-in desk.

Timing: quick answers

Time a reservation to the day someone will look at it: receive it the day before your appointment or flight, then check the PNR.

Does the Schengen "apply 15 days before travel" rule mean I should book the reservation that early?

No. Article 9 of the Visa Code sets the window for lodging the application: no more than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before the trip. Germany's checklist says 15 working days. The reservation follows your appointment date instead. See how early to apply for a visa.

My US interview is months away. Should I get a reservation now?

No, and the US does not ask for one at all. The State Department's table of 17 September 2026 put the average B1/B2 interview wait in India between 6 months in Kolkata and 11.5 months in Hyderabad. When should an onward ticket for the airport arrive?

The day before your flight. A visa file is read over days or weeks, but check-in staff look once, on your travel day. On the order form, answer "When do you want to receive it?" with the day before you fly, then look up the PNR that evening. See proof of onward travel.

Before you use an answer

Run through these four checks before you act on anything above.

• Check the date beside the rule. Thailand's exemption changed on 15 September 2026, and Malaysia's waiver for Indians ends on 31 December 2026 unless extended.
• Look for the words "paid" or "ticket number". Where a rule uses them, as Emirates' UAE visa service and New Zealand's visa waiver do, a refundable fare fits and a reservation does not. The trade-off is set out in dummy ticket vs refundable ticket.
